Last HB for me was James by Percival Everett. My book club is reading it for September and the author did a Q&A and signing at a local movie theater, followed by the movie adapted from one of his earlier novels (the novel was Erasure, the movie was American Fiction.) The bookshop that sponsored the reading was in the film, as was a view of the movie theater! Can't wait to read this!

The last HB I bought was Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors. I haven't read it yet as I am finishing my current read. I bought it after seeing some reviews on it.

I bought The Household at your Edinburgh book talk. 😊 (And really appreciated your advice on my WIP, thank you!) It was pre-planned, wanted to buy it on the day rather than ahead of time, because I wanted to finish the current draft of my manuscript before reading anything else in historical fiction - purchase was thus a helpful editing deadline. I think 90% of the books I buy are hardback - I live by a beautiful bookstore and I like reading books whilst the initial publication buzz is hot. I wish paperbacks weren't scheduled for so long after hb releases! Portia

My recent hb impulse buy was "the last witch in scotland " by Phillip Paris

The prose is effortless with the build up in tension as the community paranoia grows stronger and I found myself racing through the book because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.

For me, the key element to this tale was the relationship between mother and daughter. The bond is powerful and holds force throughout the book with Paris presenting their relationship beautifully.

A dark tale exploring judgement with the power of love, this is sure to be a novel for those interested in the history of the Scottish witch trials.

I have heard Philip speak about this and it sounds so great! Maybe in a few years I'll read about witches again because The Familiars made me need a break from them lol

It was the familiars that got me interested in the history of witches 😁

I’m pleased to tell you that I pre-ordered The Household and that was the last one I bought. This was also the first book I’ve ever pre ordered!

I’m planning to buy Ruth Hogan’s The Phoenix Ballroom which comes out this week but have not preordered.

I bought You Are Here by David Nicholls and The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley, to take on holiday. They were both amazing! I love it when a HB purchase pays off 👍

I love the niche of non-fiction. There is a book about mostly everything (and thank goodness for that)

April 2022, Lucy Foley’s The Paris Apartment - I bought to read straight away as a buddy read as I didn’t want to wait a year for paperback. I only like reading paperbacks - I either wait for paperback publication, listen to it on audio or sometimes I get airport exclusive big paperback!

That is discipline! Or not in this case... I sometimes worry (is worry the word?) that I'll have forgotten it by the time it comes out in pb, but this is very typical of my impulsive shopping habit (must have it NOW)

The excitement of buying books NOW is the best 👏 You don’t want to lose that! I always add the hardback to my Amazon pre-order list to wait for paperback. I’m also a spine bender and annotater, which isn’t ideal for hardbacks… I have been known in the past to take a hardcover off a hardback, to have as just paper! (Hide!) I’m a monster and should never be allowed near hardbacks!! Hardbacks are for good bookworms :)

Oops, forgot to answer your other questions, it was kind of planned… in as much as I’ve been trying not to buy it 😬 and I haven’t read it yet as it’s still on its way to me. Though not via Amazon 😬🙅🏻‍♀️🔪🔪🔪

Very nice! I hadn't seen this one. I sometimes find that the books I think I will definitely buy in hb I don't end up buying (I preorder a lot at the library) and then I'll buy something else on impulse. Hope you enjoy the book when you get round to it!
